actually its the closest its been FOR 60,000 years. It will get closer in 2287, only 180 odd years away.

Mars makes an opposition (closest point to the sun) when earth is at its furthest away from the sun every 15ish years. The event of this month and in particular tonight is just another 15 year cycle. Granted it is closer than it has been for a long time, although still the distance between the planets is less than 1% closer than the one in 1971. Although Mars looks awesome so bright, and hopefully if the clouds clear in the next 2 hours I might get a decent look at 'the' moment, it isn't anythign remarkably special. :P
