Last night I got bored with all my books and when I was choosing something to read my eyes fell upon the spine of this book called Girl by Blake Nelson. I ordered it from amazon.com about two years ago and the story starts with this girl called Andrea Marr who is a sophomore in high school. One of her close friends started to get into the underground rock scene in her suburban town, and when I bought it back then I didn't really appreciate it that much. I was thirteen and I was only beginning to like rock music at that time. Then for some reason it got damaged by this flood that entered our house about a year or so ago. I never got to read Girl again until last night. Anyway, I'm so glad I did that because I could relate to the protagonist of the story in a lot of ways! Like her, I really hate how mainstream and ordinary everybody in my high school is and how I want to be different among everybody. Except Andrea is a lot luckier than I am because she actually has friends who play in rock bands and who aren't afraid to have fun or be individuals. All the friends I have are as mainstream as you can get, and they don't really do very exciting stuff. I'm so happy I've only got one more year of high school left so I can move on to college and meet some real people.
Reading Girl kind of made me think about the local rock scene. Maybe I'm not just exposed to the right bands, but I noticed that a lot of the popular or new bands are into angsty, rap metal crap or doing Limp Bizkit covers. So much for music as a form of art. I don't mind rap metal that much, but at the PULP! Rock Awards last year, all the bands that performed were all rap metal. What about some variety here? Plus, these bands are usually made up of these scrawny, scary-looking guys who might try to rape you or something if you get too close. You'd also find a lot of weird people in their gigs. I still want to be in a band and I still want to join the local rock scene. But with that kind of crowd, I don't really know...maybe if it's meant to happen I'll find the right people.
I'm turning 16 in two days. I find that a bit strange because sometimes I don't look a day over 13, which I really hate. But when I looked at the mirror this morning (or was it this afternoon..I forget), I thought I saw my face change. It wasn't a drastic change really, but for a split second there it seemed like I looked a bit older somewhat. I looked away from my reflection quickly because I was scared I'd start looking like I was 13 again. But that kinda made me smile too.
Strange realization: nobody has ever given me a mixed CD or tape in my life.

Lauryn is a fifteen-year old girl who lives in the Philippines . She is a junior at a private, Catholic all-girls school run by nuns and she hates it there because the nuns are too strict and cos a lot of the girls are not her kind of people. She prefers the rain to the sun and would never be caught dead in wide-leg pants. When she isn't at the mall, at a friend's house, in Spanish, voice or swimming class, she is at home playing PlayStation games, talking on the phone, watching TV, reading and rotting in front of the computer. She hates to be a Xerox copy of everyone else which is why she never every buys stuff from the trendy stores at the mall (what a shame, the clothes can be really cute too). She has shoulder-length black hair and pretty eyes.
