Will the Real Potter Please Stand Up? In 1984, Nancy Stouffer released a book called The Legend of Rah and the Muggles, in which some characters, names and descriptions are nearly identical to those appearing in Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and its three sequels. Hmm, I know why Nancy’s book never got to be as popular as J.K. Rowling. The introduction is just not catchy. Too many big words and profound for young readers.

I agree. I find it suspicious that the names are similiar (Muggles, Harry VS Larry, Lily VS Lilly, etc etc etc), and probably J.K. Rowling got it off it as much as she denies it.
Could’ve been a subconscious thing if she’s not lying about not reading about the LP book before. But I suppose the main thing I’m more interested in is the storyline.
I liked the Harry Potter’s storyline. The excerpt of Larry Potter’s story doesn’t catch my interest. *shrugs* Probably that’s why it didn’t sell?
Heh. But if I were to copy their ideas, I wouldn’t use similar names!
LOL. What I meant was sometimes, while thinking up names, you might suddenly "think up something" but you’re actually vaguely remembering something from the past that you’ve heard in a conversation (perhaps a friend has told you about this book and given you a on-the-spot synopsis about it), or something of that sort.
It happens with websites too, occasionally one would design something and subsconsciously implement a part of a design they have seen before somewhere.
The only thing is that they don’t realize it.
but having 4 or more characters with similar names is too much of a coincidence
but having 4 or more characters with similar names is too much of a coincidence
Yep! I know. I don’t think it’s coincidential either. It’s either JK Rowling directly ripped off the names, or that she somehow subconsciously recalled them without knowing it.
But like I said, I’m more interested to know whether the storylines clash. Hmm.
Would make a good thread on the boards. O_o Could generate interesting discussions.
there are so many characters in HP but only four names that are about the same… i mean names like keepers of " " are common… it can be Keys, or Garden or grounds or gate. and there are so many people in the world with the Neville or Lily…. and there are so many books out there… i bet there are about 100 books out tere with the name Neville or lily in it….
J.K. Rowling on the invention of the term Muggles: "It is a twist on the English word mug, which means "easily fooled". I made it into Muggles because it sounds gentler."]
The coincidence of using the almost same first name and last name, Ling? Larry Potter and Harry Potter, Lily Potter and Lilly Potter, Muggles and Muggles… all in one book?
I’d understand if it’s just one name, or two, but… this is kind of a lot.
The storylines are completely different. There’s a topic at a board all about this and once I find it I’ll post it so you can all read it.
